In many schools, PE is the first subject to be cut when schedules get tight. It's treated as a break from "real" learning โ a reward for completing academic work, or simply a way to burn off energy before children sit down to study again.
At Leaders' Harbor, we see it completely differently. Physical education is not a break from learning. It is one of the most powerful accelerants of learning available to us.
What the Science Says
Multiple large-scale studies have found that physical activity directly improves cognitive function in children. Exercise increases blood flow to the brain, promotes the release of BDNF (a protein that supports the growth of new brain cells), and improves focus, memory, and executive function โ the very skills that determine academic success.
A child who has moved their body for 45 minutes is significantly more capable of focused learning than one who has been sitting still for the same period.
What We Do Differently
Our PE programme at Leaders' Harbor is delivered by certified physical trainers โ not general classroom teachers with a whistle. Every session is purposefully designed to build specific physical and mental skills:
- Gross motor development โ coordination, balance, and spatial awareness in the early years
- Team sports โ cricket, football, and relay races that build collaboration and healthy competition
- Yoga and mindfulness movement โ teaching children to regulate their bodies and breath
- Obstacle and challenge courses โ problem-solving under physical pressure, building resilience
The Mental Health Connection
Physical activity is one of the most effective natural interventions for childhood anxiety and low mood. Children who exercise regularly show lower levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) and higher levels of serotonin. In a world where childhood mental health challenges are rising rapidly, this matters enormously.
Our students don't just come to school to learn. They come to grow โ physically, mentally, and emotionally. PE is at the heart of that.
